Melbourne Water bollard

Melbourne Water Bollard | Custom Manufactured to Spec

Are you looking for a Melbourne Water bollard built to the official specification? SHUG Bollards manufactures custom locking bollards based on the Melbourne Water standard drawing GS/FEN/016. We can supply both single lock and double lock versions, ready for installation on shared pathways, access tracks, and infrastructure sites.

Whether you are a civil contractor, a landscaper, or a project manager working on a Melbourne Water project, SHUG can manufacture and deliver these bollards to your site.

What Is the Melbourne Water Bollard?

The Melbourne Water bollard is a removable locking bollard designed for use on shared pathways, access tracks, and infrastructure sites managed by Melbourne Water. It is specified in standard drawing GS/FEN/016, which outlines both a single lock and a double lock version.

This bollard is built from galvanised steel pipe and is designed to drop into a cast-in sleeve set in a concrete pad. A hinged hasp at the top of the sleeve locks over a staple plate on the bollard, secured with a padlock. As a result, only authorised personnel can remove or replace the bollard.

The design is tough, highly visible, and purpose-built for outdoor Australian conditions. It is commonly found along waterways, drainage reserves, retarding basins, and shared-use paths across Melbourne.

Melbourne Water Bollard Specifications — GS/FEN/016

SHUG manufactures the Melbourne Water bollard to the following specifications based on drawing GS/FEN/016:

Bollard Post:

  • 90(M) NB galvanised steel bollard pipe.
  • K90 galvanised cap plate welded to the top of the post.
  • 16mm diameter solid bar handles, bent and welded to both sides of the bollard pipe.
  • Overall post length of 1640mm, with 1140mm above ground and 500mm embedment.
  • Powder-coated in Safety Yellow after fabrication.
  • Reflective tape applied to the top of the bollard on both sides.
  • All burrs and sharp edges removed during fabrication.

Stopper Pipe and Lock Housing:

  • 100(M) NB stopper pipe, 140mm long, with continuous fillet weld to the top of the lower section of the bollard pipe.
  • 45mm wide x 40mm high x 10mm thick lock plate welded to the stopper pipe. Features two 14mm holes spaced 25mm from the outside edge, forming the lock staple.
  • 6mm thick end cap plate welded and ground flush, covering half the end of the pipe.
  • Single lock version features one lock housing pipe on one side.
  • Double lock version features lock housing pipes on both sides, plus a locking slide plate that passes through the bollard pipe via an RHS sleeve.

Cast-In Sleeve:

  • 100(M) NB sleeve cast into the concrete pad.
  • Hinged hasp welded to the top of the sleeve, sized to fold over the lock plate staple.
  • Padlock with weather cover secures the hasp to the lock staple.

Concrete Pad:

  • Minimum 32MPA concrete pad.
  • 350–400mm diameter base with compacted gravel for drainage.
  • Concrete pad surface must be level with the pathway.

How SHUG Manufactures This Bollard

At SHUG, we have made some practical modifications to the original Melbourne Water bollard design to improve manufacturability while maintaining full functionality and compliance.

Specifically, we manufacture our version using an 80NB bollard pipe with a 90NB sleeve, rather than the drawing’s 90NB bollard with 100NB sleeve. This adjustment allows for more efficient fabrication without compromising the bollard’s strength, fit, or locking mechanism.

In addition, we have refined several fabrication details to streamline production. The end result is a Melbourne Water bollard that functions exactly as intended, fits the cast-in sleeve correctly, and meets the security and durability requirements of the specification.

Single Lock vs Double Lock — Which Do You Need?

The Melbourne Water drawing GS/FEN/016 specifies two versions of this bollard. Here is how they differ:

Single Lock Bollard:

  • One lock housing pipe on one side of the stopper pipe.
  • Secured with a single padlock via the hinged hasp.
  • Suitable for sites where only one authority needs access.

Double Lock Bollard:

  • Lock housing pipes on both sides of the stopper pipe.
  • Includes a locking slide plate that passes through the bollard pipe via an RHS sleeve.
  • Allows two separate authorities to lock and unlock the bollard independently.
  • Commonly used on shared pathways where both Melbourne Water and a local council require separate access.

SHUG can manufacture either version. Just let us know which configuration your project requires.
