Shug here. Laverton North is one of Melbourne’s big industrial areas in the west, with plenty of forklifts, trucks and roller doors. I’ve done bollard work out there, and here’s some of it.
The job
Removable bollards at a roller door. I core-drilled the concrete slab and set removable bollard sleeves in front of a roller door. The photo above shows my core drill cutting one of the holes, hard up against the door.
Common reasons businesses put removable bollards in front of a roller door include stopping ram raids, stopping after-hours vehicle access and protecting the door itself, while still letting trucks and forklifts through during the day.
Permanent bollards protecting fridges. On another job in Laverton North, a business had forklifts damaging its fridges. I installed my permanent bollards in front of them, so a forklift hits steel instead of the fridges.

What we installed
- Removable bollards: key-lockable steel bollards that drop into sleeves set in the core-drilled slab in front of the roller door. Every removable bollard comes with its sleeve and key.
- Permanent bollards: yellow steel bollards fixed in front of the fridges, beside the strip curtains, to take forklift knocks.
Why removable bollards
A roller door is the weak spot on most factories. A removable bollard puts solid steel in front of it when the site’s closed, and lifts out in seconds when a truck or forklift needs to get through. With no power, motors or remotes, they keep working in a tough industrial environment. Where you never need access, like in front of fridges or racking, a permanent bollard is the way to go.
